The Last Edition

The Kalamalama print edition newspaper has been a teaching tool for journalism and communication students since it was established in 1969. Unfortunately, like other programs at HPU, Kalamalama has fallen victim to budget cuts. With the loss of our printing budget, this semester will bring an end to the Kalamalama print edition.

After four years of late nights and countless hours of work, it is heartbreaking to experience the end of print news at HPU. The rewarding feeling of seeing our names at the top of the page or have something tangible to send home to mom and dad — gone.

I will admit though, it is a small relief to know that for my last semester at HPU, my weekends will no longer be spent in the newsroom. Converting to a completely digital platform allows us to be more versatile with our “production and publication” procedure. Online posts and social media feeds can be updated whenever and wherever instead of adhering to the strict deadlines of print.

For the last print edition of Kalamalama (which comes out Nov. 20) we are focusing on highlighting HPU students and their passions.

Today at Lanikai beach, Teakre, Joanna, Ashley, and I starred in a  photoshoot featuring HPU student work. Everything from our make-up and jewelry to the photography itself is created by HPU students. Check out the last issue of the Kalamalama to read more about the jewelry maker Randi, the make-up artist Kelsie, and our wonderful photographer Marshall.
